Dipak and Chaitra with Karpi

A kindness kitchen for Bangalore’s community dogs

My story, in my own words

My name is Dipak Shodhan. Nom Nom Tails is my heart, my purpose and my way of giving back to the community dogs who have taught me more about strength and survival than anything else in my life.

I returned to India after ten years in Dubai, unsure of what the next chapter of my life would look like. I was searching for direction without really knowing what I was searching for. That changed in 2023 when I met Karpi, a brave street dog cared for by a scrap yard owner near my home.

One day she suffered a serious accident. She had multiple hip fractures, deep exposed wounds and a spine injury. Even in that condition, she fought with an incredible will to live. I rescued her and admitted her to the hospital. After a week there, she continued her recovery at my home for two months. Her trust, her patience and the strength with which she healed moved something in me. I often say that I helped Karpi heal, but in reality, Karpi helped me find my purpose.

Through her, I found my path into animal welfare. I began volunteering with Kumara Park Animal Aid and later started Sahakar Nagar Animal Patrol when I moved homes. Today this group has more than one hundred and forty people working together on feeding, rescues, ABC and vaccinations. I also connect people in other neighbourhoods so they can build similar support groups. Strong communities make everything possible.

Through all of this, my partner Chaitra has been a constant source of strength. Her support and belief in what I do helped me stay committed, especially on the toughest days. Having someone who stands with you through compassion driven work like this makes all the difference.

As I became more involved, I began to understand how challenging daily feeding was for many animal lovers. They bought ingredients at retail prices. They cooked large quantities of food at home. They balanced work, family and feeding. Many faced resistance or harassment while trying to feed the dogs in their area. It was painful to watch people who just wanted to help being made to feel unsafe.

I wanted to make feeding easier for them. I wanted to make it affordable. I wanted to make it consistent and stress free.

That intention became Nom Nom Tails. What started as me cooking five to ten kilograms of food for a few feeders has now grown into a small kindness kitchen that cooks an average of two hundred and fifty kilograms of fresh food every single day. That is more than six thousand kilograms of food every month. Today more than forty feeders rely on these meals for their neighbourhood street dogs.

Community dogs have been part of our lives for thousands of years. They protected our communities long before cities existed. But in today’s fast and hostile urban world they struggle for space, safety and food. Feeding them is not charity. It is coexistence. It is responsibility. It is gratitude.

Nom Nom Tails exists to make feeding simple, affordable and reliable so that feeders can focus on caring for the dogs in their community without worry. Every bowl we cook carries intention, respect and love.

If you want to feed the street dogs in your area or support someone who does, I am here to help you every single day.
